12/27/2023 0 Comments 8bit drummer sonicmaniaTo say that the announcement took its fans by surprise would be an understatement. The ninth entry in the classic series released after a painful hiatus of 12 years. I’m sure many longtime Mega Man fans will understand why. The soundtrack for each entry in the classic Mega Man series is iconic and notable in its own way, but one track immediately springs to mind when I think of my personal favourites: Flash in the Dark from Mega Man 9. It fills my heart with joy to be able to say that many of them work with us at Brave Wave today. Mega Man, a Capcom franchise with one of the most towering musical legacies in video game history, has helped launch the career of a whole range of legendary composers. Mohammed Taher (President and Director of Brave Wave Productions) Scroll down for the unranked list, and be sure to check out Overlapping Spiral by Saitone too – an extra bonus pick from Keiji Yamagishi, who composed the soundtracks for Ninja Gaiden and Tecmo Bowl. The label’s in-house composers took part, each choosing the best tracks from their favourite releases. We asked Brave Wave to compile a list of the top 10 chiptune soundtracks ever made, ranging from contemporary albums to beloved releases from the NES and Famicom era. The label’s back catalogue features releases such as Art of Fighting: The Definitive Soundtrack (2017), Sonic Adventure 2 (2017) and Streets of Rage 4 (2020). The label’s focus is to bridge the gap between western and Japanese composers through its sound, Brave Wave explores the intersection of chiptune music and video game nostalgia. Founded in 2013 by Mohammed Taher, the label has a roster of in-house composers that include Keiji Yamagishi, Lena Raine, Tee Lopes and more. One of the most prominent labels operating in video game music today is Japan’s Brave Wave Productions. Since its inception, the sound has appeared throughout several genres, such as grime and hip-hop.īuilt using programmable sound generator (PSG) sound chips or synthesisers, some of the earliest examples of popular artists sampling chiptune sounds include Yellow Magic Orchestra’s self-titled LP, released in 1978, and Haruomi Hosono’s Video Game Music album in 1984. Last year, the likes of SOPHIE, Grimes and Gazelle Twin contributed to the soundtrack for Cyberpunk 2077. But if we look at the impact of retro video game music on popular culture, we can find that one particular type of sound – chiptune – influenced popular music throughout the 80s and had a resurgence in the mid-noughties. In correlation to the rise of video games, however, are the soundtracks. It’s not hard to see why we’re staying inside, locked down, and living inside virtual worlds is either a welcome distraction, or a source of connection. Looking at the screenshot above it isn’t clear that there is a difference and I suspect this is due to image compression on this blog platform. You can see this from the screenshot below, where I used Gimp to grab a headline from TC. As soon as that image gets loaded into the Gimp editor, all pixels are doubled, so effectively your screenshot looks zoomed 2x. The canonical example is if you use Gimp to take a screenshot on a retina screen. I do not have all the details, but I’m pretty sure it has to do with the way Macs support retina displays, and how the graphical toolkits brought over from Linux (GTK) obviously do not. Yes, text in the GUI finally looks better, but anything you load into Gimp or Inkscape still looks blurry as hell, compared to anything you would compare with on Macs (Mac native programs like Photoshop and Illustrator.). While there are ports of both and both claim to support retina/hidpi displays, that is only partially true. And it’s not perfect on Macs either it’s just that Apple has had a bit more time to adapt all their assets to support all the insane resolutions they have offered years before anybody else.Īnyway, if you recently came over from Linux to Macs and you dream of continuing to use Gimp and Inkscape you will most likely be disappointed. Typically text looks fine, possibly a bit small, but icons etc which have traditionally been simple icons look really tiny. It is possible to argue that retina/hidpi displays really do not work very well on ANY platforms except “native Mac” yet, which is true. Well, yeah, that still doesn’t work very well, and hasn’t since retina Macs appeared. Naturally we want to bring these over when we started using our retina Macs. On the graphic side, Linux had many offerings, but certainly Gimp and Inkscape can and should be considered very powerful offerings when it comes to pixel- and vector editors. Additionally, if you even dreamed of developing for iOS, you need a Mac. They are both Unix’es and we still run Linux on our servers. So the last decade a lot of us Linux developers have bought Macs, and even if we can’t always run Linux on our laptops very well, we have made sure that most of our tools run equally well on OS X as Linux. If you wanted a computer with a “retina” screen (where pixels are so small you can’t see them) and a decent trackpad, the only real option was a Mac computer. The last decade it seems most computer manufacturers focused mostly on price, leaving most of the professional and enthusiast market to Apple. Gimp and Inkscape are products of the Open Source and Linux revolutions that have taken place the last three decades. While they might not cover absolutely everything Photoshop and Illustrator does, they are very advanced and capable tools available for an unbeatable price (free). I love Gimp (a pixel editor, think Photoshop) and Inkscape (a vector editor, think Illustrator) and have been using both for many years. The only reason why I would use Illustrator would be the insane speed that its GPU accelerated renderer achieves but given that Inkscape has the potential to run way faster than it currently does, I think porting it to ARM would really tighten the gap between the two softwares and finally give people a better alternative to the lacking Affinity designer and Corel Draw.Gimp and Inkscape on retina Macs do not work! I tried every other vector graphics software alternative out there and only Illustrator got close to Inkscape in terms of features and ease of use. I won't speculate but I will add that not porting Inkscape to ARM will be a hugely missed opportunity. Now either Rosetta translates Inkscape to ARM better than Inkscape is written for x86 or the M1 is simply way faster than the I7 10700. Now just so I could check all of my options, I bought an M1 to see if Inkscape would work a bit better on it and to my amazement it runs just as well if not faster than on my Windows machine ( the difference in performance when running it on Linux is marginal and not worth the hassle ). I really wanted to work on a Mac for that fabulous 5k screen but to be honest the experience of using Inkscape on that machine is utterly horrible. I use Inkscape on a daily basis for my work and my files are usually pretty much heavy loaded with a lot of objects and text. I have a 2020 I7 Imac and recently got an M1 mac air. 12/26/2023 0 Comments Gathercontent avocode integrationIn addition to the new and deepened integrations, GatherContent has built more libraries on its API, including JavaScript helper libraries using Jamstack technology. “Our goal is to allow GatherContent to easily slide into existing marketing workflows with as few barriers as possible.” “GatherContent is the glue that connects these other platforms together,” said Angus Edwardson, Co-Founder and VP of Product of GatherContent. Up until that game, I had only attended one major league game of any sport (among countless minor events I was subjected to as a kid). Lizzo did a fun Christmas song for us a couple of years back, and I hope we can continue to support her amazing career. As the intensity increased between the Boston Celtics and the LA Clippers in double overtime last month, the mechanical music selection kept coming back to mind. This is a hype hit for its confidence and energy, plus she shouts out the Vikings. Wilson: Lizzo is the best! She’s so talented, and her songs just grab you. A hype hit for sure, great college vibe and energy. Jay also performed the song live on ESPN. We did a great shoot with Jay and this song for the College Football Playoffs two years ago. Great lyrics, great beat it’s perfect for sports and college football. Some hype hits just need to be fun and get you moving and this has it! I’m so happy we were able to rock with this song on ESPN and that it’s in the playlist. Wilson: This song has such a strong message and great energy. Certainly, this is a Hype Hit as it makes you want to jump and put your fist in the air from the first note, and the lyrics are powerful. We were so fortunate to help debut this song to the world as part of fantastic NBA playoffs and Finals collaboration. Wilson: Kendrick has been an incredible collaborator with ESPN. The hook at the top of the song instrumentally drags you in and gets you ready to move! Wilson: How can you not pick a song that shouts out SportsCenter and is a Top 10 hit? I think that Jack and JestonMade are doing some fun stuff, and the song is super catchy. But I highlighted some of the more recent songs that ESPN has featured in one way or another. A single frequently-editedįile that is not friendly to Mercurial's storage assumptions can easily have an outsized effect on the size of the repository.Įven worse, if both you and someone else edit the OpenOffice document you're working on, there is no useful way to merge your work. Which includes all the classic frustrations of dealing with an updated, but still dated, AI. It still feels like the same game, for the most part. But there is a tangible difference between the classic bits of Age of Empires 3 and the new pieces. However, because both the classic content and the updates are all run by the same code, the difference isn’t too jarring. Which makes the new game modes and new campaigns a rather interesting blend of something old and new, because they’re trying to fit into an older style of gaming. Like all remastered and re-released games, there’s only so much modern window dressing you can put on old code. Which isn’t to say it’s a bad game, but there is something vintage about Age of Empires 3. But the dialogue, the storytelling, and the controls feel clunky by comparison. It’s not as flashy as a modern historical RTS title, though the graphic improvements and gameplay changes do make it feel more like a modern game. It’s dressed up, yes, and has a lot of modern improvements that make the game far easier to pick up and play, but Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition still feels like a fifteen year old game, because it is. Underneath all of the changes that come with the definitive edition, the base game is still the same. There’s also a new AI difficulty tier, new Politicians, and Revolutions on the original European civilizations to add more depth to your gameplay experience. The Single Player modes have also seen some specific improvements thanks to an improved AI which can read the battlefield better in order to make well-rounded army compositions, retreat from lost battles, and offer a greater challenge to high level players. These play out much more like the other Story campaigns, but provide some new content for one of the more classic game modes in case you want to play something that feels familiar without re-playing an older campaign. There are also two new Story campaigns for the two new civilizations, the Incas and the Swedes. The Art of War challenges, on the other hand, are far more focused on gameplay skill. The Historical Battles mode takes players deeper into the history of the various different campaigns and is certainly worth playing through. When it comes to new content, the two new game modes are both very different, but very fun. There’s also a new medal system to reward players for taking on missions at different levels. All 54 playable missions have been revamped and now include full voice acting tracks in multiple languages. For Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, the Native American storyline has been revised particularly when it comes to Act II: Shadow, which has been completely rewritten. What you might not expect are some of the content changes. Which is the expected path for a re-release. A majority of the updates to Age of Empires 3 with the definitive edition release are focused on quality of life improvements and making the game a bit more accessible to players right from the start. The Home City content is now available for players right from the start, along with pre-made card decks so players can enjoy the mode without having to grind for each city and card unlock. The Home City feature of the original AoE3 has also seen some updates to keep it more in-line with modern gaming standards. The game also has an internal tech tree now, along with an extended and scalable UI that should allow you to play more easily even on an ultrawide display. Like you’d expect from any definitive edition of a classic game, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition comes with a number of graphic and UI improvements including a new modern hotkey preset that should feel a bit more comfortable than the classic hotkey layout. The Definitive Edition will also come with its own post-launch support from Microsoft. The game also bundles all the previously released Age of Empires 3 content like “The War Chiefs” and “The Asian Dynasties” expansions along with two new game modes and two new civilizations. As its name suggests, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is an updated version of Age of Empires 3 which comes packaged with 4K graphic support, rebuilt 3D assets, a modernized UI, cross-play multiplayer, and enhanced audio. 12/25/2023 0 Comments 400i star citizenEspecially since a lot of them are just variants.
